As an Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery resident, like all residents, it was difficult to balance working and learning.  I found that the performance of my clinical duties left little time for reading and learning.   I decided early on that since I only had a little time each day, I would use it to my advantage and try to answer one "question" a day. That question might be clinically related, a basic science question, or a pimp question I had missed from an attending.  The process took only 10-15 minutes each day, but allowed me to research over 350 questions a year in a unrushed, unhurried fashion that allowed better learning and retention.  I found this to be the single best learning experience I had as a resident.

When I began my academic career, I began intermittently e-mailing questions to some of my early residents. After doing this for a while, the term E-Pimp was coined by one of them (one who is now a academic Otolaryngologist herself) whenever a new question landed in her Inbox.  The name stuck. When I moved to my new position, I began doing daily E-Pimps for my residents and I think it has been a great learning experience - both for them and for me. (Judge for yourself by looking at the Testimonials page).  My goal is to make the preparation for In-Service or Board Exams easier by making reading and learning a short, daily experience.

Here is what our users say...

Epimp truly propagates the idea of 'lifelong learning.'  The questions not only test your current knowledge, but they challenge you to learn new information. Consistent participation in daily epimp questions has significantly enhanced my general ENT knowledge base and has improved my outcomes on standardized tests.

E-Pimp has been a great way of encouraging me to read on a daily basis.  But more, it has forced me to seek out the ENT literature and given me a broader knowledge of both the landmark articles and the newer studies.  I have a better understanding of why we practice the way we do.

~ Travis Reeves, MD

"E-Pimp has been a great resource for us.  It's a great way to study varied topics each day, and proved to be a valuable study source for the yearly in service exam."

~ Nathan Joos, MD
